HIL Automation Engineer

The role

We are looking for experienced and hands‑on engineers to strengthen our Vehicle Motion Control (VMC) organization by developing automated Hardware‑in‑the‑Loop (HIL) test cases and creating robust Continuous Integration (CI) flows. The work involves close collaboration with VMC test teams and our central HIL unit to build high‑quality automation, improve HIL stability, and support efficient software deliveries.

This role includes a mix of development, support, and maintenance, all within our Python-based test framework.

Responsibilities

HIL Test Automation

• Develop new automated HIL test cases in our Python‑based test framework.
• Maintain and refactor existing test cases to improve reliability and performance.
• Build HIL test flows that integrate seamlessly into CI pipelines.

HIL System Stability & Support

• Improve the usability, uptime, and robustness of our HIL environments.
• Work closely with the HIL unit on real‑time simulation setups and model deployment.
• Perform fault tracing, issue analysis, and implement long‑term solutions.

CI/CD Development

• Create and maintain CI flows, including Zuul-based pipelines.
• Integrate automated test execution and provide clear visibility in CI dashboards.
• Support automation of regression and software delivery testing.

Collaboration & Documentation

• Support software testers across the VMC area to ensure high-quality software deliveries.
• Document setups, configurations, test usage, and best practices.
• Help develop and promote consistent ways of working with HIL within VMC.

Required Competences

• Solid experience with HIL systems, real‑time simulation, and dSPACE toolchains (ControlDesk, SCALEXIO, etc.).
• Strong Python development skills for test automation.
• Proficiency with CANoe/CAPL for automotive bus testing.
• Good knowledge of CAN, XCP, and Automotive Ethernet.
• Experience working in Linux environments.
• Background in CI/CD, ideally with Zuul, and building CI flows.
• Strong analytical, communication, and team‑collaboration skills.

Desirable Experience

• Vehicle‑level test automation or system verification.
• Knowledge of brake systems, inverters, or longitudinal control functions.
• Experience with test result dashboards (Grafana, Allure, etc.).
• Familiarity with requirements management or traceability tools.

Key Deliverables

• Automated HIL test cases connected and visualized in our CI chain.
• Clear and complete documentation for each implementation (setup, usage, configs).
• Fault tracing reports including problem identification, root cause analysis, and resolutions.
• CI flows and automation solutions ready for use by developers and system teams.

Success Criteria

• Increased automated test coverage and reliability.
• Improved HIL rig stability and reduced downtime.

Education

• Bachelor’s or Master’s in Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechatronics, or equivalent experience.
